Reverb #23: New Name

December 23 – New Name. Let’s meet again, for the first time. If you could introduce yourself to strangers by another name for just one day, what would it be and why?

I’ve met this question in various forms over the years and I never know what to make of it. I can’t imagine having a new name. There are other names I like, and there are things I would like to change and improve in myself, but a new name? No. Names are important, and I have the name I’m meant to have. If I had another name I’d be someone else.

I’m MaryAnn. I’m content enough, being me. My greatest goal is to continue to be me, only more so. Of all the MaryAnns out there, I guess I’d like to be the MaryAnniest.

So cute! May I borrow your MaryAnniest attitude to try on, please? You are confirming that my lifelong name angst over my names has been just one manifestation of general discomfort with myself.

maryanniest or maryannest or are they the same? just asking.

i grew up as ruth anne or ruthie. i did choose to drop the ruth and hang on to the anne and it sooooo works for me. never felt completely at home w/ either ruth anne or ruthie (and was never just ruth). so it is a question that many folks deal w/—especially folks who have diminutives like bobby, sonny, annie, etc.

I like my name just fine, but in truth, I’ve never really felt like I have fully inhabited it. I’m officially a “Marcella”, but only the bank calls me that.
But for the first month of my life, before I was adopted, I was “Ann”. That’s the name that doesn’t seem to fit me.

Thanks for your faithful blogging. Your posts enrich my life. I’m so pleased to have “met” you and gotten to know you a little.
